What is Active Learning and Active Methodologies?

Active learning is based upon constructivist theories of learning. Active learning emphasizes
the importance of establishing connections between one’s prior knowledge and new
experiences and concepts. As such, active learning tasks are designed to trigger learners’
current understanding, make that understanding explicit, and then generate opportunities for
learners to incorporate new knowledge into their understanding.

Active learning involves a fusion of active methodologies. An active methodology allows the
student to be the main character and the major responsible person in the learning process. It
promotes autonomy, participation, self-management among many others. Thus, giving place
to a healthier, more motivating and highly engaging learning environment.
